Michael D. Burns, Managing Partner

As a Managing Partner at Alara Capital, Mike Burns has over 17 years of experience in technology investing and management. He has had tremendous success as both an entrepreneur and a venture capitalist. Prior to the Fund, Mike was a Managing Director at TL Ventures, a $1.4 billion venture capital firm, where he focused on the communications and information technology industries along with Eric. Prior to TL Ventures, Mike was a founder and the Director of Business Development at Agere, which developed high-speed, multi-protocol network processors. Agere was acquired by Lucent Technologies and became the network processor division of Lucent Microelectronics.

After Agere, Mike was a founder of Traffic.com, serving in many roles including Chief Operating Officer. Traffic.com is a provider of traffic applications serving the digital media and mobile markets. The company pioneered several advertising-supported mobile and telematics applications. Traffic.com went public on the NASDAQ and is now a division of Nokia. Formerly, Mike was a Program Manager for electronics and systems integration programs with Lockheed Martin. In that capacity, he was responsible for integrating commercial networking products into high-performance aerospace and military platforms. Mike served as an officer in the United States Navy.

Mike has sat on more than 20 Boards of Directors. He’s been a founder, investor and director of businesses across the technology spectrum that later went IPO or were sold in significant trade sales to market-leading companies, including Finisar, JDSU, Nokia, Texas Instruments, Alcatel-Lucent, CyOptics, NET, Excite, Lycos, Ask.com and LSI Logic. These transactions created nearly $2.5 billion in value and brought numerous new products, technologies and services to market.

Mike graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania's Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology. He has a B.S. degree in Finance from the Wharton School as well as B.S.E. and M.S.E. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Moore School. Mike graduated Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi, was a Benjamin Franklin Scholar, and authored several technical publications.
